Others enter nursing homes long term because they’ve lost their abilities to function in one or more areas. They don’t have a disease that can be chased away with medicine; they’re facing old age and the limitations that come along with that gradually or swiftly. They find themselves in need of long-term care when, for whatever reason, they cannot take care of themselves—they can’t bathe, dress, eat, or use the toilet alone—and sometimes, they don’t expect to regain those abilities.
Others can find themselves in need of long-term assistance even if they can take care of their personal needs but cannot, for instance, shop for food, cook, manage their finances, use the phone, and in general look out for their well-being without assistance.
Many nursing homes offer special wings or services to those suffering from memory and cognitive problems such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. The highest level of care nursing homes have nurses on staff and offer a full range of medical services and treatment, anything from wound care and administration of medications to feeding tubes and the like. You can find almost any level of care that is needed.
The majority of nursing home residents are over sixty-five and unable to take care of themselves back home because of physical or mental conditions that simply won’t be alleviated. And according to AARP, for those over age sixty-five, the lifetime probability of becoming disabled in at least two activities of daily living or of being cognitively impaired is 68 percent.
