You worried about how long it would take for someone to discover your loved one had fallen at night on a trip to the bathroom and could have broken a hip. Such nightmares jolted you out of your sleep more than once. You finally decide it was time to consider nursing home care, something you’d been pushing to the back of your mind. Put Mom in a home? you asked yourself.
No way! was how you answered that question when it had come up previously. But you realize your parent’s health and well-being was becoming more of an immediate, everyday concern, not just a vague possibility for the future.
I understand the reluctance any one has to broach the subject of nursing homes with an elderly parent. I also understand the
reluctance of an elderly parent to readily agree to going to one. Some sons and daughters would consider it an abrogation of
their responsibilities to their parents even to contemplate such a move, and many parents would be reluctant to leave behind what had been their homes for years, decades, even generations, knowing they won’t be going home ever.
But if they make their parents’ welfare the priority, nursing
home care might be the best solution for all involved.
